I have not said a lot about the environment in my campaign but I think anyone running in Idaho has to be concerned about the environment, because we are a State of such rich and complex natural resources. Growing up in Tennessee in the 60’s, I saw the aftermath of Appalachian strip mining. I know that where there are great natural resources, there is the possibility for great wealth. However, I also saw how people eager for jobs and progress welcomed companies that took the profits of the
mining home to other states, leaving mountains cut flat into fields of weeds, and the people from those verdant ridge “hollers n’ ridges” moved out to the slums of big cities. I came to Idaho 22 years ago, thinking “man this is not like Iowa.” I saw the Sawtooth Mountains, the Snake River Canyon, fished for salmon and sturgeon, and once stopped my car for a herd of big horns to cross the road. The use of the environment must be balanced and shared for the good of all the people of Idaho. One of the interesting parts of a political campaign is the “pop quizzes.” These are the questionnaires different PAC groups send to get the views of a candidate, asking that they be returned by a certain day.
